Cherry Birch
Betula lenta
Sweet birch occurs in moist, well-drained woodland slopes. Best grown in full sun.

Chinquapin Oak
Quercus muehlenbergii
Soil Preference: Alkaline soil, Moist, well-drained soil. Light Exposure: Full sun

Chokecherry
Prunus virginiana
Best in full sun to part shade. Tolerant of drought and dry to medium soil.

Concolor Fir
Abies concolor
Do not plant in heavy clay soil. Soil Preference: Moist, well-drained soil, Sandy soil. Light Exposure: Full sun, Partial sun/shade

Douglas Fir
Pseudotsuga menziesii
Best in moist, neutral to acidic soil in full sun. Does not like hot, dry sites, prefers a cooler climate.

Eastern Red Cedar
Juniperus Virginiana
Foliage often changes color in winter. Tolerant of alkaline and acid soils. Best growth in full sun to part shade in well-drained, moist to dry soil.

Eastern Redbud
Cercis canadensis
Full sun to partial shade. Medium-to-wet loam/soil that will also tolerate acidic and heavy clay.

Flowering Dogwood
Cornus florida
Tends to develop problems in heavy clay soil. Prefers acid soil and gets chlorotic symptoms (pale green leaves) in high pH soils. Shallow root system benefits with a few inches of mulch to moderate soil temperature. It is also beneficial to shelter the plant from wind.

Grey Dogwood
Cornus racemosa
Grows in full sun in wet or dry sites but best in well-drained soil. Tolerant of heavy shade. An excellent plant for sceening or to use along ponds and stream banks.

Hackberry
Celtis occidentalis
Full sun in well drained soil, pH tolerant A relatively low-maintenance tree

Hackberry (dwarf)
Celtis tenuifolia
Suitable for: light (sandy) and medium (loamy) soils, prefers well-drained soil and can grow in nutritionally poor soil. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It prefers dry or moist soil and can tolerate drought.

Hemlock
Tsuga canadensis
This tree does not tolerate heat, drought, or urban conditions. Shelter from strong winter winds to avoid winter burn. Soil Preference: Moist, well-drained soil. Light Exposure: Full sun, Partial sun/shade, Full shade

Ironwood
Ostrya virginiana
Full sun to partial shade, naturally occurs in dry woodland understory. Best in slightly acid soil that is moist, fertile and well-drained, can tolerate dry gravelly soils in partial shade once established. Difficult to transplant and slow to establish. Not tolerant of salt.

Kentucky Coffee Tree
Gymnocladus dioicus
Soil Preference: Moist, well-drained soil. Light Exposure: Full sun

Nannyberry
Viburnum lentago
Very adaptable from full sun to shade, in dry sites to moist, wet sites. Flowers on old wood, prune after flowering to maintain size and shape. Moderate degree of salt tolerance.
